Over 140 years of history

Between 1880-1881 Temperance House was designed by William Butterfield for Anthony Gibbs of Tyntesfield and was built in 1882. Over the years the building has served as a Temperence House, the village hall, caretakers house, and the estate office. Most recently is remembered for being a public house, the Widdicombe Arms through the 1970s and 1980s, and more recently The Battleaxes which holds lots of memories for many local people.

Situated just a stone’s throw from Tyntesfied, a 19th Century Gothic Revival house set within formal gardens and parkland that is now owned by the National Trust since 2002. The Victorian country house and estate is open to the public and on our doorstep.
